Apple Cookbook Book Review

Today Chef Crombie wants you to read about his favorite apple cookbook by Lee Jackson. Read on…

Apples, Apples Everywhere—Favorite Recipes From America‘s Orchards profiles a cross section of America’s orchards and their recipes. It’s like taking a beautiful cross country tour and stopping at different orchards to sample their wonderful apple recipes.

Some 70 orchards, cider mills, and apple houses have shared their recipes, traditions, histories, and love of the land. Many recipes are old family favorites, while others feature crockpot and microwave recipes and promoting a healthier cooking style.

In addition to many dessert recipes, there are recipes for breads, salads, main dishes, jams, preserves, apple leather, fruit dips, and many other special treats. Directions are also given for using applesauce to replace fat in quick breads, cookies, and desserts.

The book also showcases the struggles and triumphs of some of the great pioneers in the apple industry, along with the apple varieties that made them great. For example, the work of Luther Burbank, the famous plant scientist and one of the greatest mass plant breeders of all time, is highlighted. Burbank’s research work with the Stark Nurseries, Louisiana, Missouri added a wealth of knowledge about fruit growing and left a legacy of rare hybrids, trees, and plants.

“As a food writer doing research for this book, I wanted to find out how those in the orchard business  prepare apple dishes for their family and friends. I contacted both large and small orchards to get a cross section of apple preparation ideas. Learning about the orchards’ rich histories and apple lore was an added plus”, states Lee Jackson, who taught family and consumer sciences in Missouri and Wisconsin schools for many years.

A love of the orchard and all things “apple” prompted her to write this, her second apple cookbook. Her first, From the Apple Orchard —Recipes for Apple Lovers, is a classic and continues to provide tempting recipes for apple lovers everywhere. Her textbook on career exploration and job success, entitled “Careers in FocusFamily and Consumer Sciences” has been adopted by several states in their school programs.

Apples, Apples Everywhere earned an award for Best Cookbook in the annual book awards competition sponsored by Mid-America Publishers Association (MAPA). Books were judged on content, cover, and interior design, usability, and overall appeal to the intended audience. Buying this book is a low-cost way to enjoy apples in all their many forms and flavors.

Both apple cookbooks can be purchased from Images Unlimited Publishing, PO Box 305, Maryville, MO 64468. For more information visit Jackson’s website here.

Here’s to a great apple season,
