Here are some more suggestions for different foods using the ingredients given on the previous blog. I have listed them from those that are the fastest to prepare for eating to the slowest. If you are very hungry and don’t have much time, start at the top. If you have more time, go further down the list.

Here is my top 6 list. Can you add more?

1. nuts or raisins to eat in hand
2. cornflakes with milk
3. prepare oatmeal and raisins
4. “boil” eggs for cooked eggs
5. make vanilla or chocolate pudding (cupcakes have come back in popularity, so why not pudding?)
6. custard, in individual cups or in a baking dish

Having butter or oil available would open up the possibilities for a wide assortment of different foods. These ingredients help add lightness and flavor to products and keep foods from sticking to pans. With oils you could make many other foods, such as popovers, pancakes and waffles, oatmeal cookies, sugar cookies, granola, popovers, muffins, cakes, scrambled eggs, omelets, and many different ways to use eggs, among others.

When we’re short of ingredients, we need to use our creative thought processes to come up with interesting and healthy foods, using what we have on hand. That is, unless we have a grocery store next door. Cookbooks and the internet are important resources in giving us suggestions for what to prepare. See our list of cookbooks here at the side for more food ideas.

I hope you’ve had fun thinking through this project.

Best to you,
Lee Jackson

On another blog, someone asked for suggestions and recipes on what to make with only ingredients as listed at the end here. They were hungry for something sweet and wanted it to be fast.

I would like to challenge you to see what you could come up with, but we’ll turn it up a notch and see who can use those ingredients for the healthiest recipe.

If you had these ingredients on hand, what would you make? I would really like to hear from you to see what you would make. Let’s bring on the healthy recipes using these ingredients only and post your suggestions.

Eggs
Milk
Self Rising Flour
Cocoa Powder
Sugar
Flour
Orange, Yellow and Red food coloring
Orange and Lemon food flavoring
Chocolate chips
Raisins
Baking Powder
Baking Soda
Nuts
Oatmeal
Corn flakes

Best to you,

Take a Look at How You Eat

We live in a hurried world. “Hurry, get ready”. “Hurry, we’re late” are words we may often hear or say.  Sometimes we zip through meals. We eat in cars. We go through drive-ins to grab something to eat.

But eating is serious business as it nourishes our body. We often lose track of the big picture and only think about “now”.

Consider thoughtfully what and how you eat.

Do you allow enough time to eat, and to eat slowly? if you eat slowly you give the body time to feel full. This helps you keep from over-eating.

Do you eat too many BIG meals when more smaller meals would satisfy you?  Big meals tend to cause the body to work harder to digest the food.

Do you tend to skip meals? Skipping meals is not a good habit to get into. This can make you much too hungry when you eat again and then any food looks good.

Snacking is good, but make sure you eat the right snacks. What are some healthy snacks, you ask?

You might try some of the following for those between meal “hungries”:

fresh fruit
dried fruit such as raisins, apples, peaches and others
carrots
celery with peanut butter
raw cauliflower
real cheese
plain yogurt
pretzels
popcorn

This is a start. Can you think of other healthy snacks?

To your health and healthy eating,

Chef Crombie
