Why Kids Love “The Littlest Christmas Kitten”

PinExt Why Kids Love The Littlest Christmas Kitten

Christmas Kittens1 300x250 Why Kids Love The Littlest Christmas KittenAnother grandmother told me she read this Christmas story, The Littlest Christmas Kitten, with her two little grandchildren, as they do every year. She said they never get tired of hearing it.

I think it has become a popular Christmas story because the bold pictures grab kids attention and the story keeps them guessing. Why are all the animals excited this night? Will the Mother Cat find her little lost kitten?

This is a short 32-page story about the night Jesus was born. The events of the night have a profound effect on all the animals, especially the cats. Included is an illustrated glossary of Christmas symbols, describing their origins. For example, why do we have candy canes at this holiday? How did the tradition of having a decorated tree get started? Why do cats purr at Christmas?

Order this book now, as there are only a few days left before Christmas. Click this link now to order your book with free shipping. Start your own Christmas reading tradition with this book.

Easy Ideas For Halloween Party Food

Kids often get overwhelmed with sugary Halloween party food. Today’s guest, Kristin Hatch, offers a few alternatives that are fast and fun.

Are you searching all over the web for Easy Halloween Recipes for Halloween Party Food that are quick and easy to make, yet not too scary for your kids? It can be hard to search all those websites for recipes and forget it if you want photos, right? Now that it is getting closer to Halloween I thought I would give you some quick ideas to help you find just what you are looking for. These four recipes are more like general ideas for fun party food.

Punchbowl Hand

Fill a latex glove with water, juice or soda. Carefully tie the end closed (a bit of string or a binder clip is good for this) and freeze. When frozen solid, remove the glove and float in your punch at the party.

Biscuit Spiders

Made up a batch of biscuits following your favorite recipe or using a mix. Shape spiders by creating a golf ball sized “body” and then roll out thin ropes of the dough to form the legs. Arrange on a baking sheet and lightly brush with milk or beaten egg. If you want, you can further decorate your spiders with raisins, poppy seeds, sesame seeds or chopped nuts. You can use aluminum foil rolls under the legs to hold them up during baking. Bake following you recipe or package directions watching to make sure that smaller items are not getting too brown.

Wild Worms and Eyes

This is simply spaghetti and meatballs. Cook an unusual noodle that you do not normally serve (maybe linguini or angle hair). When done toss in your favorite red pasta sauce and place on serving platter. Add warm meatballs and serve. You can make this spookier by tossing the noodles in a dark green pesto sauce or even in a creamy white Alfredo sauce.

Rice Cereal Creatures

Now I usually shy away from doing “sweet” party food as there is so much candy around for Halloween, but if you want a fun way that kids can help with a party this is the best. Make a batch of rice cereal and marshmallow squares, only don’t press them into a pan. Instead ask the kids to help you and create goblins, trolls, snakes, anything they want. Use small candies or frosting to add details such as red eyes or stripes. Place on foil lined baking sheet and refrigerate until firm. These make wonderful items for centerpieces on your buffet or Halloween table.

These quick ideas and Easy Halloween Recipes can add some extra fun to your Halloween party. They are simple to make and you will love that your kids can be involved and help you make cool Halloween party food. You could even use these recipes for party activities when your guests arrive.

Halloween Pumpkins

The pumpkin, when carved into a jack o’ lantern, is a symbol of Halloween. We are about to celebrate that day on October 31, the eve of All Saints Day.

Children enjoy picking out pumpkins in anticipation of the holiday. Once they have selected one, you may suggest  they draw pictures of pumpkins with different emotions, such as happy, sad, angry, and scared jack o’ lanterns and then talk about feelings. Drawing different expressions on paper can  help them decide on the design for their creation.

When choosing a pumpkin, look for one with a bright orange color that is firm to the touch. Avoid those that are soft or have blemishes on their skin. If your child wants a large pumpkin, suggest that you will buy any pumpkin he or she can carry. You may want to buy two – one for making into a jack o’ latern and one to cook. When choosing one for cooking, the smaller ones are better,  as the large pumpkins have stringy pulp.

Pumpkins keep longer when stored in a cool, dry place, such as outdoors, above 32 degrees F but below 60. If you plan to cook the pumpkin, do so within a month.

In her book, “Cooking Around the Calendar With Kids – Holiday and Seasonal Food and Fun Activities”, author Amy Houts,  includes an interesting section on how to toast pumpkin seeds. Her “Ranch Flavored Pumpkin Seeds” and “Spicy Seeds” create a tasty twist to regular pumpkin seeds.

Note: Seeds should not be given to young children as choking is possible.

Tomorrow I want to share with you a delicious pumpkin recipe from her cookbook.

Enjoy the fall weather and fall flavors!

Candy, Flowers, and Cards! Oh My!

Candy, Flowers, and Cards! Oh My!

How are these tied in with St. Valentine’s Day? Was there really someone named “Valentine”? What did he do to have a holiday named after him?

There are many stories about the origin of St. Valentine’s day. We do know there was a man by the name of Valentine, that he was killed for being a Christian during the time of the persecutions, and that he died around the year 270 A.D. Other than that, stories about his life are pure speculation.

The version of the story I like has to do with a bitter, mean Emperor named Claudius. He was the leader of a large army, but his soldiers were getting tired of fighting. They wanted to go home to their wives, sweethearts, and families. So Claudius devised a plan that he thought would keep the soldiers focused on fighting battles. He sent out a decree over all his lands that the soldiers were not to get married or become engaged to be married. He thought, “Heh, heh, this will really keep them focused on wiping out the enemy and we will be winners!”

But his plan didn’t work well at all. He failed to realize that love is stronger than any decree.

The soldiers were able to go behind the back of the Emperor and find a priest who would marry them in secret, still very legally. His name was Valentine. Couples came from all over to be married by him. However, the Emperor discovered this little scheme and had him thrown in prison and sentenced to die. While in prison, Valentine become friends with the jailer’s daughter. It is said that she was healed through his prayers. On the day he was to be put to death, on February 14, he left a message for the jailer’s daughter, signed “From your Valentine.”

So St. Valentine’s legacy lives on. It is a special day of showing even more love and affection than usual to those around us. This may include sending cards and flowers and candy to those we love.

Too Much Sugar?

PinExt Too Much Sugar?

Valentine’s Day is over, but are you still on a sugar high? Chocolates and other sweets can be highly tempting as well as addicting.

Here are 5 tips you can use now to cut back or eliminate sugar:

  • When the urge hits to have a candy or sweet, have a drink of water or brush your teeth.
  • When you have the craving, wait 10 minutes, then wait 20 minutes, then see whether you have defeated it.
  • When a candy attack hits, say to yourself, “I only eat foods that are healthy for me,” or other saying that reinforces your will to stay away or cut down on sugar.
  • Exercise helps to keep you focused. Go for a walk, ride your bike, or shoot some baskets. Do anything active that will push your sugar thoughts into the background.
  • If you don’t have candy, cookies, and cake in the house, you won’t binge on them.
